Note: this article does not apply to Lucid 3.x or above.

When opening a Lucid key in Lucid Player v1.x on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/2003 you receive the following error messages:

Can't load Custom Control DLL: 'C:\WINDOWS\system\IKDSP16.VBX'
then
Unexpected error; quitting

This occurs because Lucid Player version 1 is not compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/2003.  Lucid Player v1.x is included with products such as "Euclid version 1.0".

To open a key that ships with a version 1.x edition of the Lucid Player will require you to:

1. Install the key using the custom installation option. Select only to install the key(s). Do not install the Lucid Player.

2. Register a Lucid Player Plus v2 product or download Lucid Player Standard v2.2 (free). Either of these two editions of the Lucid Player software can be obtained via www.lucidcentral.org. Both are backwards compatible with version 1 keys.

To download a Lucid Player visit www.lucidcentral.org/downloads
(Note:
If you are not a member of Lucidcentral.org you will need to join (free) before being able to download.)

Once you have installed a v2.2 Lucid Player, you will be able to run the key by launching the version 2 Player and browsing to the location where the key was installed.

To open the key in Lucid Player v2.2, go to your Start menu and run the Lucid Player v2.2 program. You will then be presented with the 'Choose a Key...' dialog. At this point select the folder to where the version 1 key (Eg. 'Euclid') was installed to.

Choose a Key Dialog (v2)

From here, you can select the key you wish to view from the right hand pane. Select the key you wish to play and click 'Open'. You will still need the keys CD in your CD drive to play the key.

Note: You may also wish to check with the publisher of the key to see if a newer edition is available.
