Examination of the genitalia is used to distinguish between male
and female grasshoppers.
- Male grasshoppers are distinguishable by the cerci, furcula, subgenital
and supraanal plates.

- Alternately, female grasshoppers have ovipositor dorsal and ventral valves
which can be used to separate some species.
