Key SearchWelcome to the Lucidcentral Key Search

There are two ways you can search for a key in the Lucid key database. First, you can type in a word or words in the “Search” box to the right of the screen and press Go. This search will display all those keys that have the word(s) you entered in the title of the key. The alternative way is to use one or a number of the search categories below, using the drop down menus. So, for instance, you could search for an internet key (under Media/Deployment), of Higher plants (Taxonomic scope), terrestrial (Habitat) and Australia (Geo Scope).

We recommend that you check whether you have the latest (free) version of Java Runtime Environment and if necessary upgrade to the latest version when running keys based on the Lucid Player applet.

New  Updated 2012 Edition

Thrips are all about us, whether naturally in the flowers, leaves and dead branches of native Californian plants, or as invasive pests in homes and crops. With this, the first overview in 40 years of a major part of the North American Thysanoptera fauna, the authors aim to interest more people in the biology of these fascinating insects, as well as provide an up-to-date teaching resource. Equipped with a good compound microscope, amateur and professional entomologists, biology students and their teachers, conservation and land managers, environmental consultants and anyone interested in the diversity of the natural world will value this remarkable tool. It summarizes information on 250 species of California thrips, together with a further 14 species that are potential invaders. the Lucid tm system facilitates identification of 208 of these species, illustrated with nearly 1,400 photomicrographs. A novel interactive glossary defines technical terms of thrips morphology, and there is an extensive introduction and bibliography.

USDA CPHST is pleased to announce the release of AphID: Identification Guide for Cosmopolitan and Polyphagous Aphid Species developed through collaboration among organizations and institutions in the U.S. and Canada (USDA CPHST Identification Technology Program (ITP), University of Maryland, USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory (SEL), and Université de Montréal). AphID is intended to help port identifiers and quarantine officers seeking a preliminary but relatively simple way to identify aphids.

Aphids are sap-sucking insects that are most common in the temperate zones of the world. They cause direct feeding damage to the plant and serve as vectors of plant viruses. In addition, aphid honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold and attracts nuisance ants. Many economically important aphid species have a worldwide distribution but some remain outside the USA. AphID is the latest tool in the USDA's means to identify potential aphid pests.

A total of 66 aphid species are treated in this digital identification tool. AphID includes the 38 polyphagous aphid species in the three seminal works by Roger Blackman and Victor Eastop. The remaining aphids represent the 28 species most frequently intercepted at U.S. ports of entry that are not already represented on the Blackman & Eastop list.

This key (genus level) was created partially because of my frustration with going through dichotomous keys. I knew what characters I could see, but this was not necessarily what I needed to get through the dichotomous keys.  This version is the beginning of many improvements I'm sure. The Tanypodinae, I'm afraid to say,  has been a little neglected.  This is more of my own limitations and time.  I'm sure someone else may have a better characteristics and use setal locations.  I'm definitely open to suggestions and welcome feedback.  This is a side project of mine, and improvements tend to go in jumps.  Please use, but take in mind it is still a work in progress.
